At 63 pounds, Yost 750-DI is the heaviest on our list. It is also the one with the highest price tag. However, it is considered very good value for money when its size and features are taken into account.

The 750-DI head is equipped with three sets of replaceable, hardened steel jaws: top jaws, pipe jaws and V-jaws. It rotates 360 degrees with 12 locking positions (at every 30 degrees). This allows objects to be clamped at an angle.

This industrial-strength vise has a swivel base with four mounting tabs for securing it to the bench. It sports a large reinforced anvil that can also serve as an additional work surface.

What to Look for in a Bench Vise

Any serious DIYer knows that a home tool collection is lacking without a bench vise.

Here are some of the key factors to consider:

1. Jaw Width

Once you’ve determined the purpose your vise will serve, you move on to consider the jaw width. This measure tells you the maximum amount of contact you’ll achieve between your vise and the object you’re working on.

For general DIY purposes, a jaw width of 4 to 5 inches can handle most tasks.

Still, choose your tool by considering the potentially biggest piece of material you may have to clamp. It’s better to end up with more than you need rather than not enough.

Speaking of jaws, you also need to keep a couple of other things in mind. Getting a model with replaceable ones would be best: your tool may prove of exceptional quality and never require a new set. However, you’ll end up saving money if a replacement is needed: you’ll pay just for new jaws instead of a whole new tool.

In some cases, people will not need serrated jaws but that’s more the exception than the rule. Basically, you’d do better to get one with teethed jaws: they provide a firmer grip and you can always pad them if more delicate work is under way.

2. Jaw Opening

What we said about jaw width goes for jaw opening capacity as well. If you intend to work on small objects, then you obviously don’t need a big opening. However, it’s a whole different kettle of fish if your projects require holding large pipes or big chunks of wood, for example.

3. Throat Depth

This refers to the measurement from the top of the jaws to the top of the slide below. It may not be as important as width and opening but is still very worth considering.
Essentially, the deeper the throat, the more securely you can hold larger pieces in place.

4. Swivel Rotation

Since this is an extremely convenient feature, you may think you’d do best to purchase one with the largest swivel.

But tempting as that may sound, consider if you really need a bench vise that rotates 360 degrees. Mind you, these will also come with a higher price tag.

Of course, it may be better in some cases to spend that extra cash. If you have no clear idea of what projects may come up, then you’d be safer getting one with a full swivel.

5. Size

Sometimes you can find yourself hard-pressed to choose because the models you fancy come with the same jaw width and opening. This would be the moment then to consider the overall size and weight.

If that’s the case, you need to go back and review your purpose. Do you plan on subjecting your tool to some serious pounding? If so, you should go with the model that’s heavier and looks sturdier.

Size and weight will also be important factors if you want to have a portable unit. However, keep in mind that smaller vises may be excellent tools under the right circumstances but they typically have fewer capabilities.

6. Mounting

If you’re leaning towards a heavy-duty model, it would also be wise to pay attention to how the model will be mounted. Aim for one with at least three mounting tabs but the best option for a bulky vise is four.

7. PSI

This term refers to the strength with which they can clamp down on an object. If you’ve narrowed your choice down to two models and both look equally good, you may be better off with the one having higher PSI (which, by the way, stands for pounds per square inch).

Wrapping it up

Hopefully, we will have made it easier for you to pick the right product. Still, you are the person who knows best what purpose(s) it will serve.

There’s also the matter of space available, budget and sometimes brand. Speaking of budgets, it seems important to stress again how critical research and product comparison are.

That’s because even the most expensive offering from a high-profile manufacturer may disappoint you for one reason or another. Conversely, a cheaper product from a lesser known brand could be just the one for you.

One thing is certain though: if you’re a DIY enthusiast or getting there, you simply can’t have the perfect workshop without a vise mounted on your workbench.

Hi. I have recently acquired an old shophouse. It was a hardware supply store. Amoungst the remaining junk and rubbish, I stumbled upon some really old bench/engineer vices.
They are made by Record and has side markings ‘Made In England’. There are a few No. 1 and No. 2. Blue paint on them
Could I check with you roughly when were these made? Year?
I’ve been researching so much but came up with nothing close.
Will be grateful if you can enlighten me. I can show you some pictures when you reply via email.
